They built the flavours that are now widely (and wildly) celebrated! On this day, let’s remember one forerunner who brought the warmth of Nigerian hospitality to London’s tables.

Until 2019, when the ownership/management baton changed hands, the Majestic Restaurant on Coldharbour Lane (London SW9) played host to diners, celebrities and key players in the community. The eatery, which welcomed a diverse range of patrons, prided itself on serving African hospitality at its best. Further to entertaining patrons, a few of the events hosted circa 2007 are:
– A cross-section of London revellers attending its Afro Jazz launch in May 2007
– Juju music legend, Chief (Dr) Ebenezer Obey, was hosted by Majestic Restaurant and Surprise FM Radio in July 2007

– His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Okunkenu IV, CFR, and Olori (Dr) Olatokunbo Gbadebo were treated to a majestic reception in August 2007
In its time, Majestic Restaurant upheld a proud tradition of the Nigerian food culture at its finest, earning a reputation as one of the foremost destinations for relaxation and entertainment. Over the years, it featured a variety of London-based performers and popular recording artists from Nigeria.

Performing guest artists have included legendary singer, songwriter, palm wine guitarist and Agidigbo/percussion player, the late Fatai Olayiwola Olagunju – the Nigerian musician popularly known as Fatai Rolling Dollar. Others are Fuji music stars Wasiu Alabi (Pasuma), Muri Thunder, Abass Akande Obesere and Saheed Osupa (Saridon P).

Among its notable guests were the late Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, His Royal Majesty Oba Adekunle Aromolaran; former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion; and the late General Osaigbovo Samuel Ogbemudia (Rtd), CON, among others.

The ‘Housemaster’ at Majestic Restaurant was Akeem Olayemi Mustapha (d. 2020). May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace.
